Here we present firstly a high-quality reference genome assembly of A. japonicus, providing valuable insights into the molecular and genomic basis of crucial evolutionary traits in sea cucumbers and other deuterostomes. Knowledge of the complete genome of a Holothuroidea offers a unique framework for studies that seek to understand the mechanisms of cell and tissue regeneration, organ failure and ageing.
